The workshop
Every instrument starts with a piece of wood – and the question of how it wants to sound.
As a drummer and Soundbastl, I don’t just want to play – I want to understand where the sound comes from. That’s why my workshop builds instruments from the ground up: drums from local woods like apple, walnut and pine – and instruments that combine an acoustic feel with digital sound processing.
Every piece is one of a kind: built, discarded, rethought – until wood, craft and sound fit together.

Hybrid instrument · Kalimba × granular synthesis
Grain Kalimba
The Grain Kalimba combines the traditional sound of the kalimba with digital sound processing. Granular synthesis, motion sensing and intuitive controls open up new creative possibilities – without losing the tactile, playful connection to the instrument. Made for studio, stage and experimental music projects.

MIDI percussion · Wood, metal, glass
Acoustic Drum Machine
Sounds acoustic, but is played via MIDI: up to twelve solenoids strike wood, metal and glass – velocity-sensitive and with no noticeable delay. Used live in Microcosm.
Wooden ribbon microphone · Work in progress
Lousa
Lousa is Styrian for ears – and a ribbon microphone made of wood. Not only the housing but also parts of the motor are built from wood. The prototype already sounds good; the next version is currently being carved from a single piece on the CNC mill.
